Square vs Clover, which is better?

Choosing a POS system for your business isn’t rocket science by any means, but it does require some research and consideration to find the best candidates. Depends on the type of business, features you prioritize, brick and mortar vs e-commerce, budget, and long term cost of running the system, the results can vary greatly.

Square is one of the pioneers in the payment space. The square-shaped dongle that plugs into your phone’s headphone jack to accept card swipes was their trademark product in the early days. It changed our perception of how a payment terminal can be. Years go by, Square has added abundance of features and is no longer merely a payment terminal. During the same period, competition such as Clover has caught on, offering similar functionality.

The main differentiator for long term cost is Credit Card processing rates. Square utilizes a flat rate structure of 2.65% (it can be higher than 2.65% if certain conditions are triggered). Clover utilizes a more traditional pricing structures of Cost Plus or Discount Rate, which generally is significantly cheaper.
