Mastercard to Phase Out Manual Card Entry for Online Payments in Europe by 2030

Starting in 2030, Mastercard users in Europe no longer need to manually enter their card numbers when making online purchases, regardless of the platform or device. All Mastercard cards issued in Europe will be tokenized, replacing the familiar 16-digit card numbers with randomly generated tokens.

Mastercard has been collaborating with banks, merchants, and other partners to phase out manual card entry for e-commerce by 2030. Instead, a streamlined one-click payment option will be implemented across all online platforms. This change aims to enhance security against fraud and simplify the payment process by introducing passkeys to replace traditional passwords.

Additionally, customers will benefit from one-click payments using biometric authentication, such as thumbprints. Tokenization will also ensure that cards stored on merchant sites or in digital wallets are automatically updated whenever they are replaced or renewed, further easing the payment experience.
