Tax Removal Tips for Items on Clover for upcoming Canadian Tax Break

Canadian Federal Government recently announced an upcoming Tax break for various consumer goods and food items commencing Dec 14th, 2024 and ending Feb 14, 2025.  

Last week, the Canadian Government announced a temporary tax break designed to ease financial pressures for consumers during the busy and stressful holiday shopping season. Starting from December 14, 2024 until February 15, 2025, the GST/HST will be removed on specific goods, including:

  • Prepared foods such as salads, sandwiches, and prepared foods.

  • Snacks, various bakery goods, frozen dairy products like ice cream and beverages (including alcoholic beverages up to 7% APR, excluding spirits ).

  • Children’s essentials including garments, footwear, baby diapers, and toys.

  • Holiday items such as Christmas trees and decorative trees.

  • Books, print newspapers and various toy products

  • Video-game consoles, controllers or physical game media

While the upcoming tax break can translate into much needed federal tax relief for customers over the holidays for families. This can be a very confusing time period for merchants who offer said products and are wondering How to remove taxes on their various POS devices, including from Clover.

In this blog, we will guide you through the steps to easily remove taxes on Clover devices and the Clover Online Dashboard. Our goal is to help merchants prepare seamlessly for upcoming tax break situations.

Bulk Remove Taxes for multiple items: On Clover Online Dashboard, you can remove taxes for multiple items through the Bulk Edit options tab. Here is a sample. 

To remove taxes for multiple products on the Clover Dashboard, follow these straightforward steps:

Start by logging in to your Clover account through the online dashboard. Navigate to the "Inventory" submenu and select the "Items" tab. Here, you’ll see a list of your inventory. To select specific items for tax removal, use the white checkboxes next to each item. If you intend to update the entire inventory, click "Show more" at the bottom of the page to load all items, then check the white box at the top left of the inventory table beside "Item Name". Once your items are selected, go to the top of the page and click "Bulk edit options," then choose "Taxes" (the fourth option). Uncheck the boxes for "HST" and "GST" to remove these taxes from the selected items. Click "Save" to apply the changes and sync them with all your Clover devices.

*Please note “Bulk Edit” multi-item option is only available through Clover dashboard.

Remove tax from Inventory on Clover Devices: You can remove taxes from a specific item through Inventory app then click on the “Pencil” icon next to “Taxes and Fees” Here is a sample shown on Clover Station, similar format with Clover Flex and Mini devices. 

To Remove taxes for a single item using the Inventory app on your Clover device. First, unlock the device with your Admin passcode. Open the "Inventory" app, then locate the specific item by scrolling through the list or using the search function (magnifying glass icon). Once the item is selected, navigate to the "Taxes & Fees" section at the bottom of the screen and tap the Blue pencil icon next to it. Select "No Taxes & Fees", then press the green "Save" button to apply your changes.

*Please note: Currently Clover devices only allow tax removal for one item at a time. For bulk changes please see above, or temporary removal for orders see below.

Remove taxes from entire order through Register app: The '“Three Dots” in the red circle shows where the “three dots” icon originally is on the screen before the drop down menu pops up. This sample of where the “remove taxes” option is located is shown on Clover Flex device, similar format on other Clover devices. 

To remove taxes for an entire order on Clover devices. Start by placing the order as usual. If taxes are displayed at the bottom of the screen, tap the "Three Dots" icon located at the top of the screen or the top of the order section. From the drop down menu, select "Remove Taxes". The system will automatically update the total to reflect the tax removal.

*Please note, Clover devices can only removing taxes for an entire order temporarily for that order, you will need to manually select this option every time. To permanently remove taxes for this Tax break period, please see the previous two options.

These Three methods provide merchants with effective tools to manage tax adjustments on Clover devices during the upcoming two-month tax break period. At the conclusion of the tax break on February 14, 2025, merchants can easily revert these changes by accessing the same menus and reapplying the appropriate tax settings; i.e. GST, HST. The flexibility that Clover’s integrated system offers ensures a smooth transition back to standard operations.
